Windshields are made from glass with a special tempering technique. In this process, the sheet of glass is heated and then the glass is cooled rapidly. This process causes the glass to constantly expand and contract resulting in the outer layer hardening and the inner layer being induced with tension. It depends on how large of a crack is in the windshield and if it needs to be completely replaced or can be filled. If the crack is less than 3 inches, it’s possible to simply repair the windshield without having to replace it entirely.
